Art & DT

“Every child is an artist.” – Pablo Picasso

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – Steve Jobs

At Kilburn Grange School, we value children’s creativity, individuality and the development of artistic skills. Through the art curriculum, we aim to give children the skills to be able to plan, create, test and review their own ideas in a range of different contexts. All children have the opportunity to develop a variety of artistic techniques and skills and build upon these as they progress through the school. We have an art specialist that teaches weekly art lessons from Reception to Year 6.

Through the Design and Technology (DT) curriculum, we aim to give children the skills to design, make and evaluate their own products, following a design brief in a variety of contexts. Children will have the opportunity to develop their technical knowledge by using a range of tools and materials to create their products. From Year 1 onwards, each class has a DT day once per half-term to explore different aspects of design and technology. In the Early Years Foundation Stage, DT is integrated into the EYFS curriculum. It is taught and planned through whole-class teaching and continuous provision. Whole school topics such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) week also enable children to immerse themselves in DT.
