Scientists in Year 4

Pine Class has just begun learning about the topic Sound in Science. We discussed what sounds were and why we hear sound and why sounds get louder or quieter. We also briefly discussed why our ears are so important and how we can keep them safe and will be learning about this in more detail in our upcoming Science lessons.

Last week we went outside and compared how different techniques affecting our hearing over long distances, but using our hands and paper cones. It was an interesting lesson!

Through our home learning, we were exploring how sound is caused when an object vibrates. To test this, the children create a cup and string telephone to explore how sound travelled. Their findings were that the if the sound is quieter, it doesn’t travel as much as when the sound is louder.
We are on our way in becoming acousticians (a sound scientist!)
