Minister for School Standards celebrates our green action plan

We recently welcomed Georgia Gould, local MP and Minister for School Standards, along with two Brent Councillors, for a tour of our school. They visited a class learning about “Where does energy come from?” before watching a presentation from five of our Years 5 and 6 pupils. Using the mini solar panel kit, our pupils demonstrated the difference in energy needed to power a regular bulb compared with an LED light, the type used throughout our school.

We have been working to reduce our energy use and strengthen our Climate Action Plan. In October 2025, we installed 28 solar panels on our roof, followed by a new data centre that monitors our energy production and consumption. Over the past 12 months, we have reduced our electricity use by 35% and our gas use by 28%. This achievement places us third in energy savings across all schools involved in the NZAP programme.

With support from the Let’s Go Zero campaign and our dedicated Climate Action Advisor, our pupils have taken part in hands‑on workshops exploring renewable energy and using mini solar panel kits to see energy production in action. These activities have helped build excitement and understanding in our pupils as we continue to embed sustainability across our school.

Reflecting on her visit, Ms Gould said: "It was brilliant to visit Kilburn Grange School and see first-hand the commitment to net zero and sustainability running right through the school, from staff to pupils. I was so impressed by the children’s presentation and their knowledge about the school’s newly installed Great British Energy solar panels, showing just what’s possible when schools bring children into discussions about greening and sustainability. The panels will provide clean energy and save Kilburn Grange nearly £3,000 a year which can be reinvested in books, trips and learning resources that will make a real difference for pupils."

This visit was a wonderful recognition of the hard work of our pupils, staff and community.
